The CRF carries out a small number of long-term projects that bring together the CRF’s goals of research, hands-on conservation and education and communication in one specific region. The projects are intended to

  • increase knowledge about elementary biological processes and ecological interrelations,

  • develop and evaluate effective science-based concepts and methods for the protection of our planet’s biodiversity, and

  • improve understanding between science, conservation and society through social action, education and communication.

Assam’s rhinos

Together with partners from Germany and India, the CRF will carry out a project on greater one-horned rhinos and their habitat in the biodiversity hotspot Assam in India. Scientific studies on population development and genetic diversity are planned, as well as conservation measures such as combating poaching and preserving the rhinos' habitat.

In addition to the long-term projects run by CRF itself, we support a number of initiatives at the intersection of science, conservation and communication. These initiatives are run by our partners and we aim to enrich and support their work.

The white-tailed sea eagle

The white-tailed sea eagle is Germany’s largest native bird of prey - with an eventful history. It was hunted close to extinction and suffered from poisoning from lead ammunition and insecticides such as DDT. With our initiative we share basic knowledge about the birds’ biology over the course of one year and support research and conservation projects at the Leibniz-Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research and Latvian Fund for Nature.
